Update

I have refined my idea down to a name and a one sentence statement that is hopefully enticing and compelling.

Folk Fiction: This store sells one-of-a-kind items, each with it's own unique and interesting short story or narrative vignette.

The store sells the story as much as the item. This is a sort of synthesis between 826 and the Significant Objects Project: http://significantobjects.com/

Each of my options has a very different mood, and i am trying to decide which one to pursue.

& store

Aron, Chris, Scott, JT

The 'This & That' store sells two products that are paired together based on their contextual relationship to one another. The pairings can be based off arbitrary arrangements (Close Hangar & Mittens), inherently paired objects (Eggs & Bacon), juxtaposed items (Cops & Robbers). The store could be divided into sections labeled, "here & now," "this & that," "now & then."

The stores identity is established through an ampersand, which stays consistent throughout all of the product pairings.

Store Ideas

1. My first idea is a store called 100% Paper. Basically I was thinking this store could be selling only things that are made out of paper. Toys, dresses, shoes, jewelry, cups, plates, straws, etc. I know there is already many things that have been invented to be made out of paper, for purpose of recycling and this store will bring them to the customers.
2. Half a Space. I was thinking how can a take the idea of a "book store" to a different level. Then I thought of things that fold out. I was also thinking of things being sold as halves and not wholes. That got me thinking if living in a small spaces, apartments people could try to save space by cutting things in half. What about a store that sells desks that fold up against the wall. Chairs that there is only half of the left or right side and the other side is attached against a wall. Shelves that fold up flat when not used against the wall too. This store could also sell things in halves as well like half a tv screen, half a bagel, half a clock ( all for comical purposes).
3. Last idea I had was to create a surrealist store. Things sold that look like out of Dali painting. Things that are juxtaposed together that don't usually go together. For example an exotic plant sold with boots growing out of it. I still have to think about that a bit more

826 Word Mark Development

These are some word marks I've been playing with to go with my idea for a crytography related store. The mark itself is somewhat encoded and I've been playing with lots of iterations of how to make this work best. Here's what I've got so far.

3 826 Baltimore ideas

Store for cryptography - the practice and study of hiding information and the act of turning plain text into cipher-text. Cryptography is an entire field of learning and practice with lots to explore.
826 already conceals information in some ways by bending the rules of the retail space by having a tutoring facility housed there as well. The store would sell items that conceal and reveal information like classic decoder rings, books of codes, encoded bumper stickers and much more. In an atmosphere of secrecy and encryption, customers will walk through the store directed by partially encoded messages and signage, learn about simple encryption, and get into code breaking as a fun activity.
The store's playful attention towards words meshes will with the other half of 826 and opens up a lot more opportunities for incorporation into the writing portion. I can see possibilities for a code in the store window which a prize to the one who cracks it, interesting connections with pseudonyms, opportunities for new layers of narrative surrounding everyday operations of 826, and the creation of a social network surrounding the idea of a secret and encoded society.

Wee Beasties - pets both very small and entirely imaginary. They range from sea monkeys to aphids to planarian - this store has it all - stored in bell jars and petri dishes. Take home a tiny friend to take care of and share. Make a new friend and learn about another species. All pets come complete with a field guide. Some pets my be imaginary / invisible as well and naming is encouraged. In the front window there are usually a fresh litter of new tiny and cute pets waiting for a new owner to come along. Maybe all of the pets have an attribute of writing associated with them and you buy a writing buddy based on your strengths and weaknesses. Literary helpers if you will.

The Stuff of Dreams - a store to prepare you for your subconscious life. We know you lead active lives at night and this store will get you prepared. They sell replacement teeth incase yours fall out, a spare pare of pants for the first day of school, and small parachutes for when there's no more ground. The store also features suggestions from patrons for upcoming items along with current inventory that is user generated. The store also offers dream workshops and ways to turn dream content into interesting writing pieces.

Mark Revisions, Claire

I kinda liked this one

Potential Store Concepts

I am definitely feeling strongest about my first idea.

Trash to Treasure

This store concept is about recontextualizing, rebranding and remarketing old, used and recycled goods as treasure. Basically: junkyard/thrift store/dump + beautiful design, marketing & packaging. I feel as though the beauty and uniqueness we as creatives and art students recognize in items at secondhand and thrift stores is lost on the majority of the populous, who cannot get past the "used" nature of the products. With the power of design, advertising and marketing, I that I could make these items appealing to the masses once again. Trash to Treasure is a terrible name, it would need to be something more clever. Still working on that.
I like the idea because it recycles existing products instead of filling the world with more material garbage. Plus, the store would rely on creativity to be successful: the creativity of the designers and copywriters repackaging and marketing these products, so it is directly linked to the creative writing tutoring that goes on in the back of the store.

The Huge Store

The concept behind this store is that everything sold in the store would be slightly smaller than one might expect. Say, about 75% of their normal size. This size fluctuation would be mirrored in the doors, windows, shelves, and even employees of the store, with the intent being to make anyone who shops in the store feel like a giant. The title of the store is counter intuitive; one might expect it to sell only huge things, but instead it makes the shopper feel huge.

The Movie Store

The goal of this store is to make the life of the shopper like a movie. It would sell kits that contained all of the things you might need for a stereotypical or overused movie scene. For example, everything you need for a "becoming more beautiful" or "getting more physically strong" montage, or everything you need for a deep conversation in the rain scene. Customers would be able to go to the store and just buy an experience, more or less.

Final Draft

this is pretty late in the game, but I'll be working on it for a few more hours.

infographic

I'm still working on the back (the food map) (below) and I still intend for this to be a folding booklet/poster (hence the light grey lines) still adding in text in the top left sections (will also be flipped to be a booklet) I've changed the key for the race charts a bit but otherwise it's currently the same.

infographic-back-baltimoremap

since my first upload of this image I've added a title, changed the colors of the dots. still not sure about the baltimore map in the background. I think it's a little too big right now. any suggestions?

also, feel free to go to my flickr to see other versions of these.

colored icons? or just stay in gray?
can't decide..
